Weddings vs. Marraiges

weddings vs marraige

If you’ve been listening to my segment on Sir Rockwell’s show, by now you should know that my dating life is pretty bleak right about now. Even so, it still warms my heart when I see stories of people who find love, become engaged, get married and live happily ever after (or something like that)!

This past weekend I came across a story of a young man who spelled out the question “Ashley will you marry me?” with tea lights in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The idea came to him the previous summer when he was riding one of the town’s main attractions, a Ferris wheel-type ride called the SkyWheel. Aaron Talmage got the amazing idea to propose to his girlfriend of 7 years in this grandiose fashion! Talmage and 20 of his friends gathered on the beach below the SkyWheel to spell out the question so that she could see it from the top of the ride at night. At least 100 strangers pitched in to help him and his friends complete the question on the beach! Of course, his soon-to-be-fiancé had no clue that this was happening and was taken by surprise when she saw the amazing display on the beach below the SkyWheel. When she came off the ride, there was Talmage on bended knee with a ring in his hand awaiting the answer to his question and she easily said yes!

It’s stories like these that lead me to believe that all hope isn’t lost for me. One day, the right person will come along and sweep me off my feet. Granted, it’s not going to be some whimsical fairytale where we go riding off into the sunset and live happily ever after in the castle on the hill but it will be a relationship worth having and one worth waiting for :). On the contrary, stories like these also makes me think of how often people put in so much work to get engaged and plan a wedding but easily give up when the going gets tough in the marriage! I know plenty of people who had elaborate weddings and lavish honeymoons but were divorced within 12-18 months of marriage! Imagine this young man planned this magnificent proposal a year in advance, had her friends convince her to go to Myrtle Beach for Spring Break while she believed he was in Washington, D.C. and had friends come help create this proposal (with strangers pitching in!!!) to end up having a divorce over the course of 24-36 months! As crazy as that sounds, this is the reality of the majority of marriages today.

Ultimately, one has to realize what a marriage symbolizes and what it means to be a husband and a wife, a union. It’s more than a fancy wedding, the number of bridesmaids in your wedding party or where your honeymoon will be. If he comes home one day and decides that he wants to sell video games for the rest of his life, how do you support him in this endeavor? If she comes home and says she wants to quit her 9-5 job and pursue freelance writing and radio (hint, hint), do you tell her to get her head out of the clouds and get a reality check? She wants to have kids but you don’t. Did you have that conversation BEFORE you said, “I do?” You’d be surprised how many people don’t. My point in all of this is not to criticize anyone about their choices or their experiences but to shed light on what is really plaguing our generation today. Many are caught up in the fairytale rather than the reality of it all and that’s the realest thing I have yet to say here on RockDaBox!
