Tessanne Chin actually has a great album!
I have seen the numbers. I have read the reports, poured over the reviews and my conclusion is the same; the pros got it wrong this time!
Based on the voting during the 5th season of the Voice, one would expect that Tessanne Chin would be a shoe-in for a top spot release of her debut mainstream album, Count On My Love. Um, wrong! See, one of the things the pros did not factor into the equation was the “cultural side” of the voting sector that put her over the top.
The voters, for the most part are unaccustomed to actually doing a “download” as we know it. The Caribbean is famous (some would call it infamous) for downloading from their email. That means, a friend sends a song to friends. Those friends then send that song on to more friends and so on and so on. This problem is actually multiplied when the song/artist is “hot”.
Count On My Love is actually a great album! Definitely a blueprint of how to blend a great voice and a reggae vibe on cross-over tracks. The effort puts Tessanne right up there with artists like Melonie Fiona and Bruno Mars when they go for the difficult task of “selling” Reggae to the masses. I’m not sure why the marketing arm of her label thought it would be any easier to sell this vibe to mainstream America just because the artist is a Jamaican? Misunderstanding how Caribbean people buy or better yet don’t buy, has put Tessanne in the unenviable position of trying to justify her album!
She didn’t enter the Voice competition as a reggae artist! She entered as a Jamaican with a great voice!
Kudos to Tessanne Chin and Count On My Love! Great vibe, well produced, nice blend. Pick up your copy today!
