FANS and colleagues of calypso legend the Mighty Sparrow jammed Melanie’s Sports Bar in Brooklyn, New York, last week for a concert in his honour.

The January 18 event was organised by Derek Parsons of WACK Radio and famed calypsonian singer Calypso Rose.

According to EVERYBODY’S Magazine, Sparrow, sitting on a tall chair, performed some of his classic songs including Jean and Dinah, Melda and Congo Man as well as a rendition of The Lord’s Prayer.

He performed for 40 minutes.

In September, there were rumours that the Grenada-born singer had died after going into a diabetic coma at a Queens, New York, hospital.

After regaining consciousness weeks later, Sparrow was discharged from hospital and placed in a therapy centre in New York City, where he is still recuperating.

Ahead of his first public appearance in months, Sparrow spoke to EVERYBODY’S.

“I don’t want anyone to feel sorry for me. I want fans to come to see me sing and entertain,” he told the publication.

Sparrow is a giant of Caribbean pop culture. His career began in the 1950s competing in Trinidad’s carnival season.

For the next 40 years, he recorded countless hit songs. Some of those include Dragon Dance and Obeah Wedding, which were recorded with Jamaican Byron Lee.
