Hotel Fines Guests For Posting Bad Yelp Reviews

An upstate New York hotel has found a new way to make sure none of their guest post negative reviews on Yelp and we’re not exactly sure what to make of it.

The Union Street Guest House has made sure no negative reviews of their service get posted on the internet because they fine guests $500 for every negative review. The owners of the hotel only implement this rule on couples booking their weddings at the venue.

The Union Street Guest House‘s online policy states,

Please know that despite the fact that wedding couples love Hudson and our inn, your friends and families may not. If you have booked the inn for a wedding or other type of event . . . and given us a deposit of any kind . . . there will be a $500 fine that will be deducted from your deposit for every negative review . . . placed on any internet site by anyone in your party.

Should you be charged for a nasty review, you can get your money back by simply removing  it from Yelp or any other review site.

The owners of the establishment check for negative reviews frequently and have responded to the reviews by commenting “she made all of this up” and “mean spirited nonsense.”

One former guest complained about the rude demeanor of the staff stemming from an issue over a bucket of ice and the owners responded,

I know you guys wanted to hang out and get drunk for 2 days and that is fine. I was really really sorry that you showed up in the summer when it was 105 degrees . . . I was so so so sorry that our ice maker and fridge were not working and not accessible.

While the owners of the hotel have been very loud about responding to negative reviews, they’ve been radio silent when it comes to answering questions about their new policy.
