Cupcake at 3am?

cupcake vending

On last week’s show, we talked about a host of things. One of the things I mentioned was that I workout four to five times a week so naturally, health & fitness is something that I care deeply about. I’m also a huge foodie so when I saw this newest craze, I was a bit baffled and intrigued at the same time!

This past week, a Manhattan bakery, Sprinkles Cupcakes, opened their newest 24-hour ATM cupcake dispensary in New York City. Now, anytime day or night, you can feed your craving for a freshly baked cupcake by purchasing one from their ATM on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. You basically use the touchscreen to select your flavor of cupcake desired, confirm your selection, swipe your credit card (no cash accepted), the robotic arm grabs your perfectly boxed cupcake and voila: INSTANT GRATIFICATION! Who wants a store bought cupcake when you can get a freshly baked one from the ATM for $4.25 in a variety of flavors? They’re made fresh DAILY and the ATM is restocked throughout the day to ensure it’s always loaded to meet the needs of the cupcake-crazy customers. If you’re tempted to check out this fascinating new craze, there are cupcake ATMs in Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago and Beverly Hills, where the ATM debuted two years ago.

Is this service really needed? According to the Center of Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), 69.2% of adults in the United States that are age 20 years and over are overweight AND obese! That’s more than half of the adult population in America! That means 7 out of 10 people that you meet over the age of 20 is overweight AND obese. In my opinion, that’s one of the scariest things imaginable! It begs me to question if we really need another method of feeding this disease. I completely understand that people can feed these cravings with a number of other things: chocolate bars, candy, chips, cookies, etc. so you’re probably asking what’s the big deal if they have a cupcake ATM. It seems to me that nothing is off limits anymore. Nothing moves but the money in this day and age so who cares if obesity is a national epidemic. Cupcakes sell and they could care less who’s buying them. As long as they are making money, that is all that matters at the end of the day!

I’m not saying that people shouldn’t eat cupcakes. I love cupcakes and enjoy them from time to time. With that being said, I’m not paying $4.25 for a cupcake in a box from an ATM. There are so many other things I can do with that money! I think it’s something that is new and fun and it’s never been done. As a result, it’s creating a lot of buzz in the media but having a cupcake at 3am is not on my list of important things to do. First off, you shouldn’t be eating a cupcake at three in the morning but that’s another discussion for another post!

What are your thoughts on this cupcake ATM? Do you think society is going a little to far in making things easily accessible to people? Let me know your thoughts!

Until Next Time,
