Charmayne Maxwell, Singer in Grammy-Nominated Brownstone, Dies at 46
Charmayne Maxwell, member of the ’90s R&B girl group Brownstone, died Saturday. She was 46.
The exact cause of death has not yet been released. Maxwell’s passing was confirmed by her brother Brandon Maxwell, who tweeted Saturday: “R.I.P my beautiful sister Charmayne ‘Maxee’ Maxwell I can’t even believe I’m typing this right now..”
“Bad things happened to the most innocent people,” he continued. “My sister died in the most terrible way, and I’m in so much pain right now.”
Charmayne was one of the three original members of Brownstone, who were signed to Michael Jackson‘s MJJ Music label in 1994. The group’s debut album, From the Bottom Up, spent 37 weeks on the Billboard album chart and was certified platinum.
The album’s lead single, “If You Love Me,” peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart, won a Billboard Music Award and was nominated for a Grammy for best R&B performance. The group released a follow-up album, Still Climbing, in 1997.
Charmayne later pursued a solo career, signing with Mercury Records in 2000. Her tune “When I Look Into Your Eyes” was a hit on the European charts.
She is survived by her music-producer husband Carsten Soulshock and their son. Soulshock’s mother, who is Danish, told Danish publication Ekstra Bladet that Charmayne died in a fall.
